Definition:

Systems Engineering is an engineering discipline dedicated to developing and using man-made systems with their stakeholder-organisms[1] in mind.

Goals:

Systems Engineering aims to support development of system or product:

·         in order to develop the proper system or product[2]

·         in order to develop the system or product in a fitting fashion[3]

Systems Engineering Practices and Research Areas:

The following are some (not all) Systems Engineering practices and research areas:

Requirements Engineering, Trade Study, New Production Development (NPD/NPI), Enterprise Systems Engineering (ESE), User Experience/Design (UX), Experience Design (XD), Process/Method Engineering, System of Systems Engineering, System Testing Planning, System Integration Planning

Systems Engineering Related Practices and Research Areas:

The following are some (not all) Systems Engineering related[4] practices and research areas:

Market research, Project Management, Product Management, Industrial Engineering, Systems Thinking, Model Based Design

Systems Engineering Supportive Practices and Research Areas:

The following are some practices and research areas that complement Systems Engineering:

Optimization (particularly, multi-objective optimization), Psychology, Safety Engineering, Human Performance Modeling (HPM)

a.       Suggestions may offer corrections, in case the current definitions fail to capture aspects related to Systems Engineering.

b.      Suggestions may offer elaborations, in case the current definitions fail to capture aspects related to Systems Engineering.

c.       Suggestions may offer refinements, if and only if these refinements distill the current definitions while keeping them correct (e.g., refinements may not be of a demonstrative nature)

2.       for Systems Engineering Practices and Research Areas and Systems Engineering Related/Supportive Practices and Research Areas:

a.       Suggestions of further practices and research areas are welcome.

Please keep in mind: this Systems Engineering ID is meant to be as concise as possible (think of it as a Systems Engineering calling card).
Every single line of definition or goal as well the Systems Engineering aspect of each research area and practice can be expanded into a series of lectures. This is not the purpose of this ID.



[1] Stakeholder organisms are biological organisms, in individual form or as a group, including but not limited to: system users (typically human, these can be any biological organisms), system developers, customers.

[2] Typically regarded as “the right product”

[3] Typically regarded as “the right way”

[4] meaning they include at least one Systems Engineering practice or research area (from the list in the previous section)
